Jessica Marie Lunsford (October 6, 1995 – February 27, 2005) was a nine-year-old girl who was taken from her bedroom in Homosassa, Florida on February 24, 2005. Jessica was raped and murdered by 47-year-old John Couey who had been living just 100 yards away from Jessica. National and local media covered the investigation and trial of her killer extensively. On August 24, 2007 John Couey, a convicted sex offender, was sentenced to death for the murder, rape and kidnapping of Jessica Lunsford.
As a result of her death, Mark Lunsford, pursued legislation to provide extensive tracking of released sex offenders. The Jessica Lunsford Act was named after his daughter, Jessica. The law requires tighter restrictions on sex offenders and places mandatory sentencing on child rape in Florida. Many other states have enacted various versions of Jessica's Law.
